Solar PV with battery storage: hybrid systems and backup

Sources checked

A physical battery stores part of the day's solar production for later. A hybrid installation normally remains connected to the grid and imports when solar and battery output are insufficient. The battery does not increase panel generation or transfer summer surplus into winter.

Design around the household's energy flows

Compare daytime demand, evening demand, available surplus and the battery's usable capacity and power. An oversized battery may remain partly unused or lack enough winter generation to recharge. Reserve energy for backup reduces the amount available for ordinary daily cycling.

Compare the same PV installation with and without storage. Keep the extra storage cost separate from the base system and assess the additional avoided imports after losses and any export value given up.

Order backup as a defined function

The exact inverter, battery, switching equipment and wiring must support the requested backup operation. Specify circuits, phases, continuous and starting power, reserve and restart behaviour. The word hybrid alone makes none of these promises.

Ask for a commissioning demonstration, final wiring documentation and clear warranty responsibility. A compatible system design matters more than the number of panels advertised in the package.
