Solar PV in winter: production, snow and expectations
Sources checked
Solar PV produces in winter, but much less than in summer. The source's long-term Bratislava PVGIS model for 5 kWp facing south gives about 195 kWh in December and 726 kWh in July. A snowy or foggy week can be much weaker than the monthly average.
Plan for the seasonal energy gap
A home still needs the grid or another energy source for winter demand. A domestic battery shifts available daily generation into later hours; it cannot supply electricity that was never generated during a prolonged dark period.
Compare monthly heating and household demand with monthly generation. Matching the year's solar output to the year's electricity consumption conceals the winter deficit.
Snow, shading and temperature
Inspect monitoring and safely visible conditions before assuming a fault. Snow coverage, short days and low sun create different constraints from summer operation. Avoid unsafe roof access or improvised snow removal that can damage the modules.
Check equipment temperature limits, especially battery charging. A system's cold-weather design must follow the exact manuals and mounting requirements rather than an assumed universal rule.
