Solar power optimisers: shading and compatibility
Sources checked
A power optimiser adjusts the operating conditions of an individual module but does not replace the inverter. It can reduce some mismatch losses between differently illuminated panels; it cannot generate the light blocked by shade.
Compare layout changes first
Assess panel placement, recurring shade and division into independently controlled strings or MPPT groups. Moving a module or changing the layout may be another way to address the problem.
Estimate the benefit against additional equipment on the roof. A universal percentage gain is not supported merely by the optimiser product category; the source of loss and the exact configuration matter.
Check the complete system and service access
Confirm compatibility among panel, optimiser, inverter and string arrangement, including electrical ratings and required monitoring. Some systems have architecture-specific constraints, so do not assume any optimiser works with any inverter.
Ask how faults are diagnosed and replaced, which warranty covers labour and access, and whether shutdown or monitoring functions are included. Extra roof electronics should have a documented purpose and a practical service plan.
