How much solar PV power does your home need?
Sources checked
Choose PV power from electricity you can use during production and the limits of the roof and connection. Annual consumption is a useful starting point, but two homes with the same annual bill may need different designs.
Separate the three ratings
Panel-array capacity is measured in kWp, inverter power in kW and battery energy capacity in kWh. None can be substituted for another. A larger array does not automatically deliver a better return or whole-home backup.
Start with interval consumption where available, roof area and shading, planned appliance changes and permitted grid export. Consider when the home is occupied and whether water heating or vehicle charging can use daytime generation.
Compare more than the annual total
Model production and demand across seasons and hours. Check how a proposed array interacts with the inverter's voltage and current limits and whether output may be clipped or curtailed. The electrical design belongs to the specific module and inverter combination.
Compare alternative system sizes using the same installed scope, import and export values, fees and support assumptions. Avoid sizing only to fill the roof or to match a yearly energy number.
