Virtual batteries: supplier credit is not physical storage

Sources checked

A virtual battery is a contractual service for settling electricity exported to the grid. It stores no energy in your home and provides no backup during an outage. The product name does not explain how credits, fees or withdrawal limits work.

Understand the accounting mechanism

Services may credit energy units, assign a financial value or apply credits only to selected parts of a bill. Confirm whether distribution charges, taxes and other charges remain payable when you later import electricity. A stated virtual capacity is not a physical battery's usable kWh.

Read the complete billing cycle: export valuation, timing, expiry, annual limits, changes in prices and treatment of the balance on termination. The monthly subscription alone is not enough for a comparison.

Calculate only the credit you can use

Estimate the exported amount that qualifies, the credit you can actually redeem and all additional service costs. Do not count the same export both as sale income and as virtual-battery credit. A large unused balance is not the same as realised savings.

Compare a supplier service with straightforward export settlement and with a physical battery using the same demand profile. Each has different costs, losses and operating functions.

Choose a reference profile and enter your prices. Compare generation, self-consumption and an illustrative benefit without registration.
