Solar panel mounting: roofs, flat roofs and ground arrays
Sources checked
A mounting system transfers panel weight, snow loading and wind suction into the roof structure or foundations. The correct solution depends on the covering, building and location. Panel weight alone cannot establish structural suitability.
Match the supports to the building
Pitched roofs commonly use suitable hooks or brackets with rails. Tiles, metal sheets and bituminous coverings require different details. Flat roofs may use ballast or anchoring; ground systems have their own foundations.
The quantity, spacing and position of fixings follow the particular system's instructions and a project-specific assessment. There is no universal fastening pattern, ballast weight or roof-edge distance.
Request the design and weatherproofing details
Ask for the mounting-system name, covering-specific fixings, sealing method, module clamping zones and installation documentation. Assess wind, snow, load capacity, drainage and fire access as appropriate to the building.
Where the roof's capacity or condition is uncertain, obtain the necessary structural assessment. Clarify who is responsible for roof leaks, mounting defects and later service access before agreeing the complete installation price.
