Solar PV and air conditioning: power and operating hours
Sources checked
PV can supply air conditioning through the home's electrical system and reduce grid imports during sunny hours. Summer cooling can coincide well with solar production, but the actual operating times and electrical input determine the overlap.
Cooling capacity is not electricity consumption
An air conditioner's cooling rating does not state the electrical power it draws. Check the exact unit's specifications and expected operation before sizing solar panels. Inverter-driven equipment can vary its draw over time.
Compare simultaneous household loads, roof production and when cooling is needed. A daytime room and a bedroom cooled at night can have very different solar-use patterns.
Plan evening operation and outages separately
Evening cooling requires grid energy or an appropriately designed battery system. Storage must meet both energy and power requirements, including the equipment's operating characteristics and other backed-up loads.
Normal grid-connected PV stops during a grid outage. If cooling must continue, specify supported backup circuits, switching, power and runtime. Do not treat a sunny-weather generation estimate as a guarantee of uninterrupted air conditioning.
