Charging an electric car from solar PV
Sources checked
An electric vehicle can use solar electricity when it is connected during production and charging can work with the available power. A smart wallbox may adjust charging to surplus, but needs correct metering and support for the particular vehicle and installation.
Begin with parking and departure needs
Record when the vehicle is at home, the energy needed before departure and other household loads. Surplus-only charging can pause or postpone charging when production is insufficient. Set a grid top-up strategy if a dependable departure charge is required.
Check the wallbox's minimum charging power, phase handling and compatibility with the car. The advertised maximum charging rating is not the power available from solar at every moment.
Coordinate measurement and the connection
Confirm how the controller measures imports and exports, limits demand and responds to changes. Compare the cost of the wallbox and control equipment with the useful solar energy it enables you to use.
Do not assume that a home battery is required or financially preferable for car charging. Direct daytime charging, grid charging and storage each need a comparison based on timing, costs and the actual connection limits.
