Solar PV or a heat pump: which should come first?

Sources checked

Solar PV makes electricity; a heat pump supplies heat. Choose the order of investment from the home's unmet need. Panels alone cannot replace failed heating. If heating works and daytime electricity demand is useful, PV may be the earlier step.

Begin with the building's needs

Assess the heating system, heat demand, insulation and heat distribution, together with the roof and electricity use. The two products solve different tasks, so comparing their rated kW or purchase price alone cannot decide which is better.

If heating needs replacement, confirm the heat pump's suitability for the building and required operating temperatures. If reducing electricity purchases is the task, assess PV production against actual demand timing.

Compare separate and combined scenarios

Use the same investment scope, financial assumptions and support conditions. Check grid capacity, controls and planned changes in household use. Combining the equipment can improve useful daytime consumption, but annual energy totals conceal the winter mismatch.

Keep winter heating security and financing within the budget. A staged installation should leave sensible future connection options without treating a vague ready-for-expansion promise as guaranteed compatibility.
