Solar collector fluid: compatibility, dilution and servicing
Sources checked
A solar thermal circuit needs fluid approved for its system, materials and operating temperatures. Colour or the word glycol is not enough to choose it. A ready-mixed product may prohibit dilution or mixing, while another product has different preparation instructions.
Identify the actual fluid and system
Use the collector and system documentation to establish the approved specification, concentration, temperature range and material compatibility. Record what is already present before considering a top-up.
Do not substitute ordinary automotive coolant or mix fluids merely because their colours match. The product instructions determine whether mixing or dilution is permitted.
Have service respond to the condition
A professional assessment can establish whether the circuit needs topping up, correction, flushing or replacement and why. A low level or changed fluid condition may indicate a system issue rather than a simple consumable shortage.
Agree the work scope, fluid quantity, disposal, checks and commissioning record. Keep the product details and service date with the installation documents so the next service does not have to guess what is in the circuit.
