Home batteries without solar: savings and backup

Sources checked

A home battery can operate without solar panels. It charges from the grid and supplies energy later, or powers selected circuits during an outage when designed for that purpose. It needs a suitable battery inverter and charger, control equipment and an approved electrical arrangement.

A price difference alone is not profit

Compare the variable cost of charging with the value of the electricity actually delivered after losses. Include device consumption, service charges, wear and the complete installation cost. Do not assume that the full difference between two advertised electricity prices is retained for every kWh charged.

The worked example in the Slovak guide leaves about €105 per year before wear and other costs. At that benefit, the example battery modules alone imply roughly 19.5 years of simple payback; the complete supply costs more. This is a scenario, not a tariff forecast.

Backup is a separate design requirement

Specify the circuits, power per phase, expected runtime, reserve and switching behaviour. Grid charging and physical storage do not automatically establish safe outage operation. Confirm the connection and supplier terms for the intended charging and discharge arrangement.

Ask for the exact battery/inverter combination, protection, meter, commissioning, documentation and warranty responsibilities. Treat backup resilience as a separate reason for purchase when assessing the financial case.
