Adding a battery to existing solar PV
Sources checked
Adding storage starts with checking the exact existing inverter and wiring. A supported hybrid inverter may stay. Other systems require comparing inverter replacement with a separate battery inverter connected on the AC side.
Document the existing installation
Collect the inverter model and firmware, panel strings, electrical diagram, inspection reports, distribution conditions and monitoring access. Ask the manufacturer or installer to confirm the supported battery combination. A brand match or battery-ready marketing label is insufficient.
Confirm how changes affect the original warranties, metering and connection conditions. Keep the responsibility for the old and new equipment explicit.
Compare complete alternatives
A DC connection needs a compatible battery input and controls. AC coupling adds a battery inverter to the home's alternating-current system and may retain the PV inverter. Compare conversion losses, installation work, control and service rather than assuming one label guarantees a better outcome.
Include meters, protection, communications, commissioning and updated documentation. If backup is wanted, specify the supported circuits, power, phases and switching as part of the order rather than assuming it comes with the battery.
