Solar pool covers: heat retention, fit and handling
Sources checked
A solar pool cover helps reduce evaporation and retain heat. It is not automatically a safety cover. Choose it from water-surface dimensions, shape, material and handling needs. Weather and use affect the thermal benefit, so no universal temperature increase can be promised.
Fit the water surface and intended use
Measure the actual pool shape and check the manufacturer's trimming and orientation instructions. Thickness alone does not establish suitability or service life. Confirm compatibility with the pool environment and maintenance requirements.
Treat buoyancy and safe access separately: a floating heat-retention sheet does not establish protection against a person or animal falling into the water.
Plan removal and storage
Compare the weight and practical handling of the wet cover, the available space and whether a compatible reel is needed. Check storage and sunlight-protection instructions when it is off the pool.
If using active solar heating, compare the cover's reduction of losses with the additional heat supplied. A cover's benefit depends on how and when it is used, rather than an unconditional number of extra degrees.
