DIY solar: preparation, equipment and professional responsibility

Sources checked

Preparing information or buying equipment yourself is different from designing and electrically connecting a PV system. An owner can define goals and compare products, but the scope of specialist design, installation and inspection needs agreement before purchasing a kit.

Compare a complete, connectable system

A low kit price may omit mounting, cables, protection, metering, switchboard work, commissioning and connection administration. Check exact component compatibility and whether a contractor will take responsibility for the supplied equipment.

A zero-export system still operates with the grid when connected in parallel; the setting does not remove the applicable distribution process. An independent off-grid circuit is a different arrangement.

Include responsibility in the saving

Agree responsibility for roof works, electrical work, documentation, faults and warranties. A contractor may not cover equipment it did not supply, and a hardware warranty does not replace installation responsibility.

Do not assume a self-installed system qualifies for household support. The source did not verify DIY work as eligible under the programme conditions. Compare the full scope and consequences before treating avoided labour as the final saving.
