Slovak solar terminology: fotovoltika and fotovoltaika

Sources checked

In Slovak, language specialists recommend fotovoltika and the adjective fotovoltický. You will also see fotovoltaika in searches and product names. Both spellings commonly refer to photovoltaic electricity generation; the spelling does not identify a different technology.

The words used in offers

A photovoltaic cell converts light into direct-current electricity. Cells form a module, usually called a panel. Several modules form an array, and modules connected in series form a string. The inverter converts the electricity for compatible appliances or the grid. FVE is a common Slovak abbreviation for a photovoltaic installation.

Solar is a broader word than photovoltaic. Solar thermal collectors produce heat, usually for water. A quote for solar collectors cannot be compared with a PV quote by counting panels alone.

Power, energy and control

Wp and kWp describe rated peak panel or array power under test conditions. kW describes power at a particular moment; kWh describes an amount of energy. A 10 kWh battery is not automatically capable of supplying 10 kW.

MPPT means maximum power point tracking. It is a controller function that adjusts the electrical operating point of the panels. Hybrid refers to an inverter's supported system functions; it does not, by itself, promise whole-home backup.
