Solar PV wiring: understand the system diagram
Sources checked
PV wiring depends on the panels, inverter, connection, battery and required functions. A simplified diagram explains energy flow but is not an installation drawing. The actual conductors, protection, settings and switchboard arrangement need a project-specific professional design.
Identify the system boundaries
Distinguish the DC panel circuits, inverter, AC connection, metering and any battery circuits. A grid-connected system, an off-grid system and a backup installation use different arrangements even when their panels have the same rating.
String design must respect the inverter's electrical limits. Cable routes, voltage drop, environment, protection and isolation form part of the same circuit design.
Specify backup and export control separately
A hybrid inverter or installed battery does not automatically provide outage supply. The design must identify supported circuits, separation from the grid, switching and power limits. Export control also needs the correct measurement and settings.
Request an as-built diagram and records of the completed checks at handover. Changes during installation should be reflected in the documentation rather than left as an undocumented variation from a sales sketch.
