Solar cables: cross-section, route and connectors
Sources checked
Choose solar cable from the electrical requirements, route length and environment. A 6 mm² cross-section is not a universal answer for every PV installation. Current capacity, voltage drop, installation method, temperature and connector compatibility need to be checked together.
Design for the actual circuit
Equal panel power can lead to different cable requirements in a high-voltage string and a small 12 V system. The operating current and complete route matter, including how the cable is laid and exposed.
Ask for the product designation, ratings and the calculation for the actual route. Cable colour or the word solar does not establish compliance with the complete design requirements.
Connectors and installation are part of the circuit
Confirm the exact connector system and permitted mating combinations rather than assuming similar-looking plugs are interchangeable. Use the required tooling and assembly procedure within a professionally designed installation.
Include support, routing, protection from damage, penetrations, identification and inspection in the scope. A shopping list of cable cross-sections cannot substitute for the final electrical design or safety checks.
