Solar charge controllers: MPPT or PWM?
Sources checked
A solar charge controller manages battery charging from panels. Choose it using panel electrical characteristics, system voltage and the battery's charging requirements. MPPT permits operation with panel voltage different from battery voltage; PWM needs closer matching.
Check every input and battery limit
Use the panel's open-circuit voltage, operating voltage and current, including the appropriate cold-weather allowance. Compare them with the controller's maximum input ratings and the manufacturer's permitted array arrangement.
Confirm the battery chemistry, charging values, maximum current and how the BMS can stop charging. A charge-controller wattage label cannot establish compatibility on its own.
Avoid buying a function already included
An inverter or power station may already contain the required solar-controller function. Check its input specifications before adding a separate regulator. A bare panel is not automatically a complete battery charger.
Include cable routes, protection, connectors and the installation environment in the design. Compare the complete system and useful charging behaviour rather than assuming the MPPT label makes any combination suitable.
