Solar panels for caravans: loads, batteries and travel
Sources checked
Choose a caravan solar system around daily use, the leisure battery and travel pattern. Maintaining a parked vehicle's starter battery is a different job from running a refrigerator and lights while camping. A panel-and-controller kit is only part of a completed installation.
Fixed or portable panels
A roof-mounted module remains on the vehicle and depends on where it is parked. A portable module can be placed in sun while the caravan remains in shade, but needs setup, suitable cables and secure practical use.
Check usable roof area, attachments, penetrations, weight and the exact electrical specifications. Flexible and rigid options require their own approved mounting arrangements.
Size the complete charging and storage system
List daily appliance energy, simultaneous power and the number of days between charging opportunities. Include other charging sources and the battery's permitted charging conditions, especially in cold weather.
Confirm the controller, BMS interaction, cable routes, protection and distinction between starter and leisure circuits. A small maintenance panel should not be treated as a leisure-power system or a device for emergency engine starting.
