Solar car-battery maintainers: capabilities and limits

A small solar car-battery charger is mainly a maintenance device for a parked vehicle. It is not a jump starter and is different from a caravan's leisure-power installation. A 10 W label does not promise all-day charging at that power or recovery of a deeply discharged battery.
Check the battery and connection
Confirm supported battery chemistry, voltage and the manufacturer's permitted vehicle connection. A socket may not remain connected when the ignition is off, and the vehicle's electronics can affect the suitable arrangement.
Read whether regulation and reverse-current protection are included. A bare panel with clips is not necessarily a complete approved maintenance charger for every car.
Match expectations to parking conditions
Shade, glazing, panel position, short winter days and the vehicle's standby consumption affect the result. The rated power is measured under test conditions, not guaranteed during a week in a car park.
Compare the required maintenance function with the actual available sunlight and the battery's condition. If the battery repeatedly becomes discharged, investigate the cause rather than assuming a small panel will solve the underlying fault.
