12 V solar panels: actual voltage and battery charging
Sources checked
A panel sold as 12 V does not produce a constant 12 V output. The label describes a voltage class for use in a corresponding battery system. Actual operating voltage, open-circuit voltage and current must fit the controller and battery arrangement.
Read the electrical specifications
Check Voc, Vmp, current and power for the exact module. Include the relevant environmental conditions in the design. Two panels with a similar nominal label can have different electrical ratings and connector arrangements.
A battery needs suitable charging regulation and protection. A panel is not a replacement for a complete charger simply because its nominal label resembles the battery voltage.
Plan the complete small system
Choose the controller for both the array and the battery chemistry, including the required charging profile and BMS control. Cable length and high current can make voltage drop important in a low-voltage system.
Compare mounting, wiring, protection and the energy needed each day. A 12 V label describes neither storage capacity nor the amount of electricity that will be generated in winter.
