Charging LiFePO4 batteries: voltage, BMS and cold weather
Sources checked
Charge a LiFePO4 battery using the values specified for that exact product. There is no universal charge voltage for every LFP battery. The source's Victron 12.8 V example recommends 14.2 V absorption and 13.5 V float; do not copy those values to a different battery without its instructions.
Match the charger and protection
Use a charger or solar controller with the required lithium profile or manufacturer-approved adjustable values. A lead-acid setting alone does not establish suitability. Check charging current, voltage and any prohibited modes against the manual.
The BMS must be able to stop charging, either by disconnecting it or by signalling the charger or inverter. A display showing battery voltage does not substitute for that protection.
Respect cold-charging and system limits
The source's Victron example permits charging from +5°C. Other models may have different limits or approved heating arrangements. An operating-temperature range for discharge must not be mistaken for the charging range.
For home storage, verify the exact inverter compatibility list, control equipment and firmware. Sharing LiFePO4 chemistry does not mean two devices can communicate or operate together.
