LiFePO4 batteries: cells, 12 V batteries and home storage
Sources checked
LiFePO4, also called LFP, is a lithium battery chemistry using lithium iron phosphate in the positive electrode. A cell has a nominal voltage of 3.2 V; four cells in series give 12.8 V, commonly sold as a 12 V battery.
Compare energy rather than amp-hours alone
Voltage multiplied by Ah gives Wh: 12.8 V × 100 Ah = 1,280 Wh, or 1.28 kWh nominal. Equal Ah ratings at different voltages do not describe equal stored energy. Check the usable energy and power limits separately.
The same chemistry name covers loose cells, complete 12/24 V leisure batteries and integrated home storage. They are different products with different controls, installation and compatibility requirements.
Protection and temperature remain essential
LiFePO4 batteries require a battery management system, BMS. The manual specifies whether it is internal or external and how it controls the charger or inverter. Chemistry alone does not establish a safe complete system.
Manufacturers restrict cold charging. The Victron example discussed in the source permits charging only from +5°C. That is a model-specific example, not a universal limit. Read the exact charging instructions and the conditions behind cycle-life claims.
