Solar fences: generation, foundations and site suitability

Sources checked

A solar fence uses photovoltaic modules as part of the boundary structure. It can be an alternative when the roof is unsuitable, provided the boundary receives useful light and the site supports an appropriate structural and electrical design.

Assess the boundary as a generating site

The fence direction, nearby trees and buildings, access to both panel faces and seasonal shading affect output. A bifacial module does not guarantee a fixed extra yield simply because it is mounted vertically.

Model the actual arrangement rather than estimating production or payback from fence length alone. Check privacy, access and the site's intended use together with the generating function.

Compare the complete constructed fence

Include foundations, posts, wind loads, impact exposure, drainage, wiring, protection and the route to the inverter or home. Confirm property rights and the applicable permission process for the actual boundary project.

Compare the full supply with ordinary fencing plus another solar location where relevant. Ask who handles damaged modules, structural repairs and electrical faults, and how replacements can be accessed safely.
