Replacing a roof with solar panels already installed

Sources checked

A roof replacement with existing PV requires professional shutdown, removal, storage and recommissioning of the solar system. The roofer and the company responsible for PV must agree the sequence and responsibilities before reconstruction begins.

Record the existing installation

Collect equipment models, string arrangement, wiring, inspection records and monitoring information. Plan identification, safe storage and handling of modules and components. Agree responsibility for accidental damage and the interruption of operation.

A new covering may require different fixings or a revised layout. Existing mounting parts cannot automatically be reused simply because the modules remain the same.

Price the return to operation

Include compatible mounting, weatherproofing, electrical reconnection, protection checks, testing and updated documentation. Confirm whether distribution or warranty conditions are affected by the changes.

If PV has not yet been installed and the roof needs renewal soon, repair or replace the roof first. Compare the whole sequence rather than accepting a cheap initial panel installation that creates a second removal and installation job later.
