Photovoltaic film and flexible panels: identify the product
Sources checked
Photovoltaic film is not one standard product. Sellers use similar wording for flexible PV modules, thin-film modules and solar-control window films that produce no electricity. Identify the actual function before comparing specifications.
Where flexible products can make sense
A flexible module may suit a curved or weight-sensitive surface where a conventional framed glass panel cannot be mounted, such as a vehicle or boat. Confirm the permitted bending radius, backing surface, adhesive system and thermal requirements for the exact model.
Flexible construction is not the same thing as thin-film cell technology. A flexible product may still use crystalline cells, while a window film may have no photovoltaic cells at all.
Compare power per area and the whole installation
Check Wp per m², total weight, connectors, controller compatibility and both product and performance warranties. Follow the approved mounting method rather than assuming any panel can be glued to any roof.
For a principal home roof, compare the flexible option with a documented conventional module and mounting system, including serviceability and long-term availability. A low-profile appearance alone does not establish a better complete solution.
