Solar motion-sensor lights: detection, modes and energy

Sources checked

A sensor light must match three tasks: illuminating the area, detecting movement and collecting enough energy. Detection range applies under stated conditions, not every mounting height or approach direction. A dusk sensor and a motion sensor perform different jobs.

Read the detection and lighting modes

Check the sensor's coverage, mounting instructions, sensitivity and response time. Confirm whether the lamp stays dim after dark, turns fully off or uses another selectable mode. Frequent triggering can use substantially more energy than a lightly used demonstration.

Evaluate the beam and glare at the actual entrance or path. A long sensor range does not establish useful light at that distance.

Test the installed position

The lamp's best mounting point can leave its panel shaded. Confirm the supported panel position, cable and fixings. Check operation after installation and adjust within the documented limits.

Compare winter charging, battery replacement and the full-charge conditions behind runtime. A motion sensor can reduce consumption, but it does not remove the dependence on sunlight or battery state.
