Solar street and pole lights: lighting design and autonomy

Sources checked

A solar pole light is a system of lamp, panel, battery and supporting structure. A lamp-only price does not automatically include the pole, foundation or installation. An IP rating or a street-light product name does not prove winter autonomy or compliance for a particular road.

Specify the lighting task

Assess the area, required light distribution, mounting height, glare and operating hours. Check the actual photometric and product information rather than relying on LED count or a promotional wattage.

The required lighting result and control mode determine energy use. Reduced output or motion-triggered operation cannot be treated as the same duty as full brightness all night.

Design energy and structure together

Confirm seasonal charging, supported battery capacity, maintenance access and the conditions behind autonomy claims. Pole loading, wind, foundations and site conditions need a suitable structural arrangement.

For a route with defined lighting requirements, have the actual design assessed rather than assuming a packaged lamp meets them. Include the complete installed scope and future battery or component replacement in the budget.
